Sustainable Garden Nutrients: From Kitchen Scraps to Garden Gold
The Story Behind Our Sustainable Garden Nutrients
Kitchen to Garden Co. began with a simple observation: every day, kitchens across America throw away two of the best ingredients for sustainable garden nutrients — eggshells and coffee grounds. Eggshells are pure calcium. Coffee grounds are loaded with nitrogen. Together, they're nearly everything a thriving garden needs."
This swaps "natural fertilizers" for the exact keyword phrase, which also gets you off two terms your brand guide flags: "natural" as a marketing claim, and "fertilizer" over the preferred "garden nutrient." Rest of the paragraph is untouched.

How Second Harvest Started
Kitchen to Garden Co. began with a simple observation: every day, kitchens across America throw away two of the best natural fertilizers on earth: eggshells and coffee grounds. Eggshells are pure calcium. Coffee grounds are loaded with nitrogen. Together, they're nearly everything a thriving garden needs.
Instead of letting them end up in landfills, we collect them, sanitize them, and turn them into clean, ready-to-use plant food. No chemicals. No fillers. No factory processing. Just real nutrients, given a second life.
What started as a way to feed our own tomato plants became a small business built around a bigger idea — that the best things for our gardens are often hiding in plain sight.
Why We Do This

Our Eco-Mission
We prioritize sustainability by diverting waste from landfills. In our early days, we trained staff at four partner restaurants across San Diego County to properly save and store eggshells and coffee grounds. Today, we continue this mission through small-batch production and upcycled packaging.

Feed Gardens Naturally
Avoid mystery ingredients and synthetic chemicals by choosing a cleaner way to grow. Our repurposed eggshells provide essential, slow-release calcium, while our coffee grounds enrich the earth with organic matter and a gentle nitrogen boost. Together, they work to improve soil structure and support the development of strong, healthy roots using only real nutrients tailored for home gardeners.

Made by Hand
Every batch is dried, ground, and blended by hand in small quantities to ensure total consistency and care. We individually check each bag before hand-packing them into recyclable kraft pouches. This intentional approach helps us avoid overproduction and eliminate waste, delivering a fresh, quality product from our home to yours.
How We Turn Scraps Into Garden Food
1
COLLECT
We source eggshells and used coffee grounds from trusted local kitchens and cafés.
2
STERILIZE
Every batch is oven-baked at 350°F for 25 minutes to kill mold, pests, and pathogens before it ever reaches your garden.
3
DRY & GRIND
We dry the materials completely and grind them into a consistent, easy-to-use texture that blends well into your soil or potting mix.
4
PACKAGE
We hand-pack each batch into recyclable kraft bags, label them by hand, and seal them so they stay fresh until you’re ready to feed your garden.
Why Upcycled Beats Synthetic
Most commercial fertilizers are made from synthetic chemicals or mined minerals — energy-intensive, often harsh on soil microbes, and rarely something you'd want around food crops or pets.
What we sell is what gardeners have used for centuries: eggshells for calcium, coffee grounds for nitrogen. The difference is we've done the cleaning, sterilizing, drying, and grinding for you, so you can skip the prep work and get straight to feeding your garden.
It's better for your soil, better for the planet, and honestly — it just makes sense.
